A room designed to grow with him—from first-grade adventures to teenage milestones.

There is something incredibly special about designing a bedroom for your child. Not because it has to be picture-perfect, but because it quietly becomes the backdrop for childhood itself.
It is where bedtime stories are read one more time, LEGO creations slowly take over the floor, homework gets finished after school, and quiet conversations happen just before the lights go out. These ordinary moments eventually become the memories we treasure most.
When I began dreaming about my seven-year-old son’s room, I knew I wanted to create more than just another “little boy” bedroom. I wanted a space that could grow alongside him—a room that would feel just as appropriate when he was seventeen as it does today.
Rather than choosing a trendy sports theme, I leaned into three design styles I love: classic prep, vintage athletics, and warm traditional interiors. Instead of decorating around a favorite team, I focused on timeless furniture, rich textures, and meaningful details that reflect who he is today while leaving room for who he’ll become tomorrow.

Designing Around a Feeling
Before I ever started shopping, I asked myself one simple question:
How do I want this room to feel?
The answer wasn’t “cool” or “trendy.”
I wanted it to feel peaceful.
I wanted it to be a room where he could read before bed, spend hours building LEGO creations, invite friends over to watch a game, work on homework after school, or simply have a quiet place to rest after a busy day.
Every design decision came back to that feeling.
Choosing a Timeless Color Palette
Color sets the tone for the entire room.
Instead of bright primary colors often found in children’s bedrooms, I chose a palette that feels rich, calming, and sophisticated enough to grow with him.
For the statement wall behind the bed, I painted the fluted panels in Sherwin-Williams Naval (SW 6244). The deep navy immediately gives the room character while creating a beautiful backdrop for warm wood tones and layered bedding.
To keep the room feeling bright, I recommend painting the remaining walls in Sherwin-Williams Snowbound (SW 7004) or Sherwin-Williams Alabaster (SW 7008). Leaving the ceiling and trim white creates crisp contrast and allows the navy feature wall to remain the focal point.

A Classic Foundation That Will Last for Years
One of the easiest ways to create a bedroom that grows with your child is by investing in timeless furniture.
Instead of choosing themed pieces, I selected a soft gray upholstered bed with clean lines. It instantly makes the room feel elevated while remaining neutral enough to style differently as he gets older.
Behind the bed, the fluted accent wall adds architectural interest that makes the room feel custom without requiring a full renovation.

Layering Makes a Room Feel Lived In
One thing I’ve learned is that cozy rooms aren’t created with one comforter.
They’re created by layering.
I started with crisp white sheets before adding a navy quilt, a soft gray blanket, and a chunky forest green knit throw. The bed was finished with plaid Euro pillows, forest green Euro pillows, and a cognac leather lumbar pillow.
The combination feels relaxed, inviting, and collected instead of overly styled.

Bringing Warmth Through Natural Wood
Nothing balances a deep navy wall quite like warm walnut furniture.
Using the same wood tone throughout the room creates a sense of continuity and makes the space feel thoughtfully designed. Matching nightstands frame the bed, while the dresser and desk provide practical storage for clothes, books, school supplies, and all of the little treasures that seem to multiply throughout childhood.
Floating shelves became one of my favorite additions because they allow him to display books, trophies, family photos, and favorite keepsakes in a way that feels personal.

A Sports Room Without Feeling Themed
I knew I wanted sports to be part of the room because they’re such a big part of his life.
But instead of filling the room with team logos and character bedding, I approached sports the same way I would artwork.
Basketballs become sculpture when displayed vertically on the wall.
Framed sports photography adds personality without overwhelming the room.
Books, trophies, and meaningful keepsakes tell the story of who he is today while leaving room for future memories.
The result feels collected instead of cluttered.

Every Child Needs a Cozy Corner
Some of my favorite childhood memories involve simply having a place to escape with a good book.
To create that feeling, I added a cognac bean bag and matching leather ottoman beside the window. It gives him a comfortable place to read, build LEGO creations, watch a movie, or simply unwind at the end of the day.
Sometimes the smallest corners become the most loved spaces in a home.

The Details That Complete the Room
The final layer of every room is lighting.
Warm sconces beside the bed create a soft glow in the evening, while the statement ceiling fixture gives the room character during the day. Forest green curtains frame the windows beautifully and introduce another rich layer of color that complements the navy accent wall.
Finally, a large textured area rug anchors the entire room and makes it feel warm underfoot.

A Room That Will Grow With Him
Children outgrow toys, favorite colors, and even hobbies, but they rarely outgrow a room that is thoughtfully designed.
That was my goal from the very beginning.
By choosing timeless furniture, classic colors, natural materials, and meaningful décor, this room can easily evolve over the years with simple updates to bedding, artwork, or accessories.
More than anything, I wanted to create a place where my son feels comfortable, safe, and deeply at home.
Because long after the furniture changes and the walls are painted a different color, I hope he’ll remember how this room made him feel.
